Dear Parents of Whitefish Middle School,

This morning, in the 5th grade pod, there was a small fire in a garbage can in the boys restroom. Our staff was able to put out the fire quickly before it spread. There were no injuries nor was there a need to evacuate the building. We did have a strong odor of smoke throughout the building which your child might have noticed. Building administration, Assistant Fire Chief and Whitefish Police investigated the situation and were able to identify the individual and will be following up with appropriate disciplinary action. We are grateful for the quick action of our staff and students to help with the suppression of the fire.

Yeah, I saw.  The incident at my school didn’t lead to a big fire, but things got very sad with the fire starter.

The school was a death trap for a whole lot of reasons, starting with overcrowding, followed by bullshit fire codes ( thanks to grandfather exception it was maintained to 1906 code), and ending with a cover-up involving the Catholic Church. It was started by a fire bug, whose name is known, despite what the article says.

When I was in high school a couple of nitwits got expelled then the same night broke in to the school and set a fire in a trash can. It burned down half of the school. We had to finish the year sitting at little tiny desks in the middle school and then the next year it was all trailers.

My high school was 1930s vintage and getting pretty beat down by the 90s. One of the science labs on the ground level had a knot hole in a floorboard through which many generations of bored youth had stuffed snack wrappers and other garbage filling up the cavity under the floor.

One day during a chemistry class some bright spark decided to drop a lit splint through in... Cue a bunch of smoke, a shitload of fire trucks (when a school catches fire you send all.of.them.) and a big hole axed through the floor to put it out.

Never underestimate the stupidity of bored teens.

to be fair, “fire codes” back then were little more than “fail” or “lulz.”

GM built a huge transmission plant in 1949, and just 4 years later burned to the ground.

To make matters worse, the Catholic Church managed to convince the City of Chicago to grandfather in old schools, exempting them from code updates. So that school was “compliant”. To the 1906 fire code it was required to meet.

Because it’s just kids, you know?

Much of what you see in schools today is a direct result of the aftermath of that fire.

My middle school underwent a renovation and after they found a shit load of wiring from the 1920s had move them into trailers. My high school physics teacher happened to be there and the workers comments when they found them  “oh god these are live”
